what killed me hurted me most was seeing lenny’s hint of a cry after the whole speech he gave midge at the end of the episode. “….you will break my fucking heart” will be a mantra in my mind. i will never forget it, just like the final exchange at 3x05. he thinks she’s so good and is so determined to see her thrive it’s RIDICULOUS to think she would sabotage it herself. he’s looking out for her in ways we don’t even know.

I don’t mean this in a pretentious way I just hope everyone understands why that final scene between Midge and Lenny in the Mrs. Maisel finale was so incredibly complex and magnificent. I WANT that for people. I want them to see the LAYERS.

In a lot of ways, it’s reminiscent of Jess asking Rory why she dropped out of Yale, but in other ways, it’s the polar opposite. Lenny is Midge’s Jess – her north star, someone who she trusts implicity, the person who sees her in a way no one else ever can, or ever will. Someone with unwavering belief in her, someone who would sell their soul to make her happy, make sure she gets where she needs to go. It’s desperately romantic and inspirational and beautiful in that way.

It’s also important. Because just like Rory, Midge needed to hear what Lenny said, but Midge has needed to hear it since the pilot. She’s so privileged and blind in so many ways to certain things and her flaws in that regard have kept her from doing the work she needs to do to get where she needs to go. Even Susie can’t seem to muster up the right perspective to get Midge on track. That night in Carnegie Hall is going to help Midge grow more than anything else has in the series up to this point.

But when it comes to MIdge and Lenny, they’re also opposite of Rory and Jess, because Lenny’s trajectory is so starkly different than what Jess’ was. Jess was succeeding, Jess was soaring. And while Lenny may be soaring now, he’s destined to crash and burn. Jess was always going to be OK. There was always a hopefullness to Jess and Rory – that they might find each other again one day and walk into the sunset, happily ever after.

But as passionately and ardently as Lenny loves Midge – and make no mistake, he loves her – he is destined for tragedy. And he knows it. He knows that whatever success he’s experiencing now has a time limit, that most likely, he won’t be around to see Midge succeed. So he has to at least know – feel – that when he’s gone, she’s going to be OK. She’s going to take over the world, just like he knows she can.

And ALL of that is said in their final scene together. The passion. The romance. The mutual respect. The yearning. The trust. The foreboding. The tragedy. The inevitable, heart wrenching, terrible tragedy.

Midge doesn’t know how this story ends. But Lenny does. And when she rides off into the sunset, he won’t be there next to her.

  1. i never got to say it, but i love you.

    i loved you.

and, god, it was so tiring to have kept it all in.

five years. i was in love with you.

it never faded when the day i had to move came.

the love i had for you did fade; however, it took longer than the time i was madly in love with you.

with this piece i say goodbye. i loved you.
